Schisandra chinensis contains many bioactive compounds that justify its positive health effects, such as lignans, triterpenes, phenolic acids, flavonoids, essential oils, and polysaccharides. Diben-zocyclooctadienes are the most represented group of lignans in the fruit of S. chinensis, with schisandrins being the most abundant.

S. chinensis is a plant whose fruits have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine. The fruit extract of schisandra perfectly fits the definition of an "adaptogen" as it normalizes immune defenses with positive effects on the upper respiratory tract. Recent studies demonstrate its antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities.

The name "schisandra" comes from Greek and it means "five flavors": it refers to the five basic tastes perceived when eating the fruit of this plant: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy.
