Already since 1980 multiple controlled clinical trials have evaluated the use of chondroitin sulphate in patients with osteoarthrosis in the knee, dorsal spine, hips and joints of the hands, with significant beneficial effects in symptoms (pain reduction), in function (improved mobility) and reduced need for anti-inflammatory medicines, with a better action than the placebo.

The main function of chondroitin sulphateis to ensure a correct degree of hydration, flexibility, elasticity and impact absorption.

Glucosamine sulphate reduces the activity of collagenase and increases proteoglycan synthesis. This suggests that glucosamine can play an elective role in increasing the availability of synovial fluid and in maintaining joint lubrication.

In 2008 reports were published of studies conducted  by the US NIH (National Institutes of Health) about thestudy GAIT (Glucosamin/Chondroitin Arthritis InterventionTrial), perhaps the most extensive of the kind, performed toevaluate the efficacy of administering glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, a combinationof glucosamine/chondroitin sulphate and an anti-inflammatory medicine  (celecoxib) for joint pain.

The results of the study have shown that the combinationglucosamine/chondroitin sulphate (1500 mg+ 1200 mg thrice a day) was statistically more effectivein reducing moderate to severe arthrosic pain in the knee. Moreover, chondroitin sulphate reduced swelling and articulareffusion.

Hence the use of chondroitin sulphate/glucosamine was associated with improved symptoms (pain and joint function) and reduced use of NSAIDs and analgesics.
