Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid and a precursor of nitric oxide, presenting a variety of beneficial effects. However, about 40% of orally ingested arginine is metabolized by the en-zyme arginase, allowing only 60% to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Hence, the importance of citrulline, a powerful endogenous precursor of arginine that is not extracted from systemic circu-lation and is poorly metabolized in the intestine and liver. In addition to being more effective in providing arginine, L-citrulline can inhibit arginase activity, limiting the degradation of arginine it-self.

As demonstrated in a clinical study conducted on athletes (Suzuki et al. 2017), the combined in-take of the two amino acids is more efficient in increasing plasma arginine levels compared to the individual amino acids (f1).
