Klamath algae has a very complete nutritional profile and high bioavailability and is therefore considered a superfood: it is composed of 20 amino acids, more than 60 identified minerals and trace elements, 14 vitamins, 15 carotenoids, chlorophyll, beta carotene, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, polyphenols, and special algal molecules like amino acids similar to mycosporines (MAA), AFA-phycocyanines (AFA-PC), and β-phenylethylamine (PEA).

Of the compounds this algae is rich in, a noteworthy one for its properties is phenylethylamine. This molecule is also called the “love molecule” because it is produced in mass quantities when a person falls in love. This molecule has been shown to increase synaptic levels of dopamine; thus, being able to modulate dopaminergic transmissions, it also acts positively on mood, attention, concentration and libido.

Klamath algae: Aphanizomenon flos aquae is a blue-green microalgae that grows wild in Klamath Lake in Oregon (USA), an uncontaminated area of volcanic origin.
