Vitamin K2, or menaquinone, is a nutrient contained mainly in soybean fermentation products like nattō, which is especially rich in menaquinone-7 (MK-7), the form with the best bioavailability. Vitamin K2 is also present in certain cheeses and in appreciable amounts in chicken, meat and the livers of cows and pigs.

Vitamin K2 is redistributed via the blood flow to tissues outside the liver like the bones and blood vessels; this explains its greater involvement in the processes of osteogenesis, bone mineralization and the cell metabolism of blood vessel walls, as shown by increasing scientific evidence.

Various studies have indicated an inverse relation between a dietary intake of menaquinone and calcification of the coronary arteries and the aorta (LARN 2016). Calcification of the coronary arteries, in fact, is a very significant predictive factor for cardiovascular disease.

Many scientific studies have shown that vitamin K2, consumed as MK-7, is more effective in maintaining bone health because it is more absorbable and biologically active for a longer time than vitamin K1, which is held in the liver to activate coagulation factors. Scientific evidence shows how MK-7 works in close synergy with vitamin D3 on osteogenic differentiation and the deposition of osteocalcin in the extracellular matrix. Osteocalcin is a protein produced by the osteoblasts during bone formation, and its activation gives them the ability to bind with calcium.
