Milk Thistle is a highly resistant plant that grows spontaneously in the Mediterranean, and adapts to all types of soil.

The plant’s name is traditionally associated with the escape of Mary, Joseph and Jesus into Egypt. While fleeing, the family rested in a field of milk thistle. For its purifying substances, folk medicine indicated milk thistle for breast-feeding mothers.

The use of this plant for therapeutic purposes has been known since prehistoric times, but isolation and the characterisation of active ingredients were completed in the 1970s, when silymarin, the plant’s active ingredient, was isolated.

Several clinical and in vitro studies have confirmed the hepatoprotective property that was perceived by traditional use.

Silymarin is able to increase hepatic cell resistance to the absorption of toxins, favouring the regeneration of new cells in the liver.

Some data suggest that silymarin has a direct effect on hepatic cholesterol metabolism, inhibiting its biosynthesis.

With its hepatoprotective action, milk thistle is indicated for all types of liver diseases. This important effect includes an immunomodulating, antioxidant and restoration action.
