B-6 Active 20mg

Vitamin B6 Food Supplement

Indicated for cardiovascular health, it improves psychological health and contributes physiologically to central nervous system and immune system function, and to energy metabolism.

B6 (pyridoxine) is a vitamin that participates in the reactions of more than 60 enzymatic systems.

It is particularly necessary for amino acid and protein synthesis and degradation reactions, and for the synthesis of haemoglobin and of some biogenic amines (serotonin, histamine, dopamine, acetylcholine, GABA), compounds that are involved in nervous system activity.

Forms of vitamin B6 deficiency can be induced by prolonged use of certain medicines, particularly of oral contraceptives.

Deficiencies of this important nutrient have also been observed in certain cases of depression. Combined with folic acid and vitamin B12, B6 favours a reduction in homocysteine levels, besides being involved in mood control, premenstrual syndrome and nausea caused by pregnancy. Moreover, through its action on various minerals and neurotransmitters, it has a nervous system regulating action.

Insights

Natural sources with the highest pyridoxine concentrations are meats (liver and kidney), egg albumen, milk, cereal and leafy green vegetables.

We must consider that heat, freezing and frying considerably impair the vitamin content of foodstuffs.

The general term vitamin B6 includes three compounds, pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. All three can be transformed through enzymatic processes into pyridoxal-phosphate, the biologically active form of this vitamin.

A preliminary study that compared two groups of women aged over 50 years by observing them for three years reported that high intake of vitamin B6 was associated with a risk of depression below 43%.

Some studies observed results on carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms, leading to theorise an analgesic effect that can improve the pain score.
